Essential Functions

Position Description

The Program in Comparative Literature at Washington University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice of Comparative Literature beginning in the summer of 2021. The successful candidate for this appointment will teach in our graduate and undergraduate programs, advise in these programs, and supervise graduate student instructors. Additionally, the appointee will assume a variety of administrative responsibilities related to the graduate and undergraduate programs, such as the advising of PhD students, majors and minors, and organizing and coordinating departmental activities and events. Summer duties include recruitment of PhD students and advertising for the International Writers track in Comparative Literature and program planning as well as graduate exams and advising, the regular semester teaching load will be two standard courses per semester.

Required Qualifications

We seek applicants with an established record of publication across the genres fiction, poetry, and translation and who are well connected in the publishing world. A deep knowledge of international publishing opportunities and an understanding of the contemporary global literary scene including trends, venues, prizes and the marketplace and prior experience teaching creative writing to international student is expected. Candidate must have native/near native fluency in English and two additional languages and be a published creative writer with published works in more than one language. PhD in Comparative Literature or related field required.
